High Seas Health Alert: The 2026 Cruise Ship Hantavirus Outbreak

A routine expedition through the South Atlantic has turned into a focal point for global epidemiologists. Since early April 2026, the MV Hondius cruise ship has been at the center of a deadly hantavirus outbreak that has claimed three lives and sickened at least five others.

The Timeline of the Outbreak

The vessel departed from Argentina on April 1, making several stops in remote regions including Antarctica and South Georgia. The first case emerged on April 6, when a male passenger developed fever and gastrointestinal distress, tragically passing away just five days later.

As the ship sailed toward the Canary Islands, more passengers fell ill. As of May 6, 2026, the ECDC and WHO have confirmed the following:

  • Total Cases: 8 (3 laboratory-confirmed, 5 suspected).
  • Fatalities: 3 deaths reported to date.
  • The Strain: Laboratory sequencing confirmed on May 6 that the culprit is the Andes virus (ANDV).

Why This Strain Matters

Unlike most hantaviruses, which only spread from rodents to humans, the Andes virus is the only known strain capable of spreading between people. This has led to rigorous contact tracing for the 147 passengers and crew members representing over 23 countries.

While the ECDC currently assesses the risk to the general public in Europe as "very low," the incident highlights the rising trend of hantavirus in South America. Argentina’s Ministry of Health recently reported 101 infections since mid-2025—nearly double the previous year’s count.
